Smile Design

Smile design may better be considered a part of ‘total facial esthetics’.

First let’s evaluate what a beautiful smile should look like.  The teeth should be white and straight and have the shapes that are complimentary to your facial structure.  But complimentary is the key word. While veneers, bleaching, orthodontics (Invisalign), recontouring, etc can create beautiful teeth, it is paying attention to the complimentary details that turns a nice smile into a WOW! first impression.

The smile line or esthetic zone – the teeth that are showing when you are smiling – is determined by several factors, including:
·        The shape and size of your teeth.
·        Your gum tissue.
·        The shape and size of your lips.
·        Your facial muscles.

When you smile, really smile and laugh, is the gum level even across all the teeth?  Does it seem to go up and down so some teeth appear longer than others? Cosmetic gum alteration can create a balanced and pleasant look.

When you smile, do you feel the appearance of your upper teeth is overshadowed by excessive gum tissue?  Do you try to shorten your smile to reveal less gum?  Are you of the opinion that your upper teeth appear too short compared to the amount of gingival tissue displayed when you smile?  If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, you may have a condition that is commonly called a "gummy smile" or excessive gingival display.

The optimal smile line appearance should reveal the least amount of gum tissue possible. Gum tissue visible in the smile line should have balanced, even contours that are in harmony with the upper lip. It is for this reason that many people with a gummy smile or excessive gingival display feel their smile to be unattractive, oftentimes feeling reluctant to smile at all.

Gummy smiles are usually managed by Cosmetic gum alteration and / or altering the hyperactivity of the facial muscles.  Theraputic Botox injections creates an environment where the lip muscles are less active and a more pleasing lip reveal is created.

Are your lips the shape and fullness that you want?  Do you still have the ‘cupid’s bow’ shape of your upper lip?  When you look at your smile, do the wrinkles in the lips bother you?  Do the naso-labial folds and marionette lines become more pronounced?  Do your eyes close a bit when you smile and the crow’s feet around your eyes become prominent?
Botox and dermal fillers allow us to treat the associated structures to create ‘total facial esthetic’. Before photos are on the left, after photos on the right.
